SNAP-Ed Partners with Senior Centers to Improve Older Adult Health
“The Durham County DINE (Durham’s Innovative Nutrition Education) program, in partnership with the Durham Center for Senior Life, has made a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of adults aged 55 and over through monthly cooking demonstrations and nutrition education. These sessions are offered at DCSL’s main site, its satellite location in northern Durham, and in collaboration with partnered senior living communities throughout the city.
Key Impacts:
Increased Nutrition Awareness: Older adults are gaining practical, evidence-based knowledge on how to prepare healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant meals, empowering them to make better food choices.
Hands-On Learning: The interactive demonstration model equips participants with cooking skills and nutrition tips they can apply at home, increasing their confidence and promoting independence.
Improved Health Outcomes: Focused on chronic disease prevention and management—including hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease—these sessions support healthier aging and improved quality of life.
Social Engagement: The group setting promotes social interaction and connection, reducing isolation and creating a stronger sense of community among seniors.
Equity and Access: By bringing these services to multiple locations—including northern Durham and various senior housing communities—DINE and DCSL ensure accessibility for a diverse range of older adults.
This partnership between Durham County DINE and the Durham Center for Senior Life has proven to be a valuable resource in supporting older adults with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to lead healthier lives through nutrition.”
