Rural Nutrition Education

“My name is Otis, and I work for Maine Snap-Ed in a rural county called Aroostook County or the ‘Crown’ of Maine. I was born and raised in this area, so teaching here has been such a blessing. I have been providing nutrition and well-being education in various small schools and organizations. I have also been working on creating and establishing school gardens throughout the area and developing partnerships with adaptive groups and organizations to bring free or low-cost physical recreation activities for all who want to move their bodies in enjoyable, fun ways.

I believe SNAP-Ed is a critical part of helping our most vulnerable segment of the population understand and practice good eating habits along with basic nutrition education to help them have happier, healthy lives. I, firsthand, have seen the impact these curriculums and programs have had on my community. Snap- Ed’s mission is so important in creating a better public health framework as well as bringing much needed educational materials and resources to people who desperately need it. I enjoy being a Snap-Ed Community Educator tremendously and hope I can continue to educate and hopefully make my students lives a little healthier and better each class. Thank you.”
