Registered Dietitian Attests to Value of SNAP-Ed for Chronic Disease Prevention

“As a registered dietitian with a MPH in public health, I can attest to the importance of SNAP-Ed. SNAP-Ed funding is crucial to ensure that individuals have access to nutrition education, which is important in the treatment and prevention of chronic disease. Working as an outpatient dietitian, I encountered many patients who would have benefitted from the information that could be provided from a SNAP-Ed nutrition program. I would find myself providing similar education to patients over and over, but having group sessions would have been a more efficient and cost-effective way to deliver the education in many cases. Additionally, patients would have benefitted from the social interaction and motivation that group settings could provide. Further, given my high patient volume, developing curriculum for nutrition education classes was not feasible. Having access to educators using validated programs is an incredible asset that would improve patient care and maximize health outcomes.”
