Pittsburgh Mother and Kids
“In the few years I’ve implemented SNAP-Education programs, I’ve taught healthy lifestyle changes to communities all over Pittsburgh, PA. While I have many success stories from SNAP-Ed programming, one sticks out in particular to demonstrate the importance of SNAP-Ed.
In a free cooking class SNAP-Ed hosted at a public library, a mother and her two adolescent children were present. This mother had a full time job, but she attended class with her children so to that they could all learn about nutrition and cooking. The recipe I demonstrated was turkey tacos, but the recipe also featured sweet potatoes as an ingredient to highlight their nutrients and taste. While we prepared the recipe together, the mother shared that she had never cooked sweet potatoes before and was learning how to cook them for the first time. This SNAP-Ed class taught her a new skill that will help her feed her family nutritious, cost effective, and delicious food at home.
Healthy eating and nutrition knowledge should not be taken for granted. SNAP-Ed provides opportunities for people to learn and apply healthy habits into their lives.”
