Ohio Pantry Partner

“Gallia County SNAP-Ed Program Assistant, Tina, prepared a packet of information to share with local food pantries. She was met by one pantry director who needed help teaching clients how to use the large amount of yogurt they were receiving. Tina quickly responded by compiling some CYP recipes and tips for using plain yogurt in place of sour cream, oils, or eggs in recipes to reduce fat and add calcium.

Shortly after this, the pantry received a grant from the Pallottine Foundation of Huntington to purchase locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables and provide nutrition education to their clients. The pantry reached out to SNAP-Ed for help. The produce and other pantry items were distributed on Thursdays for seven weeks. During this time, clients were offered an opportunity to attend a SNAP-Ed class the following day at a church down the street.

Those attending the Friday class learned nutrition and preparation ideas specific to the produce of the week along with general MyPlate and food resource management information. They were also able to taste a recipe and receive additional servings of the fresh fruit or vegetable featured that week from the pantry.”
