Housing Residents Share Healthy Recipes
“At a permanent supportive housing apartment complex located in the heart of Cuyahoga County, in Cleveland, Ohio, the SNAP-Ed program has motivated residents to try out new recipes as well as healthier adaptations of their beloved dishes. Thanks to the Celebrate Your Plate initiative, participants are not only enhancing their own diets but are also actively applying what they learn in their daily lives with their loved ones, becoming advocates for healthy eating patterns.
One resident loves to help with food demonstrations and serve samples to his fellow residents. Since joining the programming, he has purchased his own whisk and various cooking supplies to recreate recipes for his partner and family. He has also motivated other residents to participate in SNAP-Ed, hoping to inspire more healthy habits.
Another resident enjoys using food demo recipe cards to prepare meals for his family during their visits. He particularly loves making Black Bean Brownies. His enthusiasm and willingness to share his knowledge have encouraged many in his circle to embrace healthier eating habits.
SNAP-Ed lessons are scheduled during regular coffee and pool shooting hours, yet residents eagerly shift their focus for 60 minutes of relaxation to engage with SNAP-Ed. They look forward to learning about healthy eating habits and happily take part in cooking demonstrations. SNAP-Ed lessons have become a beloved community tradition, uniting residents to establish healthier eating patterns, expand their knowledge and experiences, and try new recipes from the Celebrate Your Plate collection.
Celebrate Your Plate has inspired residents to embrace nutritious choices that they ultimately share with their friends and loved ones. Their stories are a testament to the power of education and community support in creating lasting change.”
