Florida Teacher

“I am a teacher in a suburban area. My students have been able to learn and enjoy the SNAP-Ed program for many years. They look forward to their lessons on nutrition each week. They use what they have learned in their daily lives. I often hear them discussing the nutrition of the foods they are eating during lunch. Their favorite part is to plant their gardens each quarter. They are responsible for planting, weeding, watering and harvesting the gardens. The smiles on their faces are priceless when it is time to harvest and prepare the foods they have grown themselves. Last year we planted potatoes and then made classroom mashed potatoes with them. They kept saying they couldn’t believe they were eating potatoes that they had actually planted and harvested. This program not only offers nutrition lessons to my students, but also experiences with gardening and growing their own food. Most of my students have never been to a farm and they are amazed at the process of gardening and harvesting. Taking this program away from our students would be a huge disservice to them and our community.”
