green broccoli

Florida Teacher

“I am a teacher at a school that received SNAP—ED services. A nutrition and gardening expert came to our school weekly to teach my second graders about nutrition and supported us in starting a school garden. I learned just as much as the students did during these sessions. These weekly lessons got my students excited about trying new foods and taught them about how important it is to feed our bodies a balanced diet. I was fortunate enough to see big changes in my students’ attitudes about trying new foods. For instance, one particular student of mine came to school daily with mayonnaise and saltine crackers for lunch because that is all he liked to eat. After working with SNAP-Ed and growing our own food, he opened up to trying (and enjoying) broccoli, green beans, and mulberries! All of these foods came from the gardens on our campus and were introduced because of what we learned about in school. This program is essential to making America healthy and well worth the funding.”
