Elementary Students Garden and Learn with SNAP-Ed

“My classroom of students at Dry Creek Elementary School in Port Angeles, WA, had beneficial experiences getting out into our school garden with the expertise of Amelia, SNAP-Ed Farm to School Educator and Coordinator. She led our group several times this school year in learning in the gardens and outdoor classroom. Students explored various concepts with hands-on activities such as estimating, measuring, and solving for area and perimeter, learning about the garden ecosystem, and we acquired knowledge about the vegetables growing in our garden and composting. Students excitedly tasted different types of vegetables and made connections to the produce served in our cafeteria. Afterwards, students also enjoyed collecting compostable material during lunchtime. Students looked forward to these lessons and were highly engaged throughout with observations, discourse, drawing, and writing. I hope our school community can continue to learn, grow, and thrive with the guidance and support of the SNAP-Ed program and experts like Amelia
