An Ohio Recovery Council Group

“Each year, the Ross County OSU Extension Office offers a Cooking Matters series for women who are part of the Recovery Council group. The FCS Educator and SNAP-Ed Program Assistants work together to provide a series of six hands-on cooking and nutrition classes. The participants learned more about preparing meals at home, how to make healthier choices, and how to stretch their food dollars. They also tried new foods and discovered they liked many of them.

The program receives financial support from the Adena Health System and United Way of Ross County to allow participants to take ingredients home with them to make a recipe prepared in class. Several participants reported the recipes were a hit with their families.

After one of the classes, participants were reflecting on what they had learned and how they were using the knowledge and skills gained in the class. One participant was planning to make the peanut butter pocket recipes with her kids. Another shared she made the cowboy caviar at home for her family and added the leftovers to her eggs the next day. Yet another stated ‘This cooking class is where it’s at!‘”
